Schon im 16. und 17. Jahrhundert herrschte an Logik-Lehrbüchern kein Mangel. Anders aber als heutzutage stand seinerzeit nicht in allen weitgehend das gleiche drin. Denn die Logik besaß schon auf dem elementaren Niveau, auf dem sie in den Grundlagenkursen der Gymnasien und Universitäten gelehrt wurde, keine einheitliche Form und keinen standardisierten Inhalt mehr. Gesorgt dafür hatte die vernichtende Kritik der Humanisten an der spätscholastischen Tradition, deren Komplexitäten und Subtilitäten einerseits sowohl als pädagogisch und didaktisch verheerend als auch als ebenso mühevoll wie nutzlos empfunden und andererseits als Verfälschungen des antiken Erbes wahrgenommen wurden. Timpler beansprucht nicht, ein fundamentales Grundlagenwerk der Logik geschaffen zu haben, sondern bloß ein schlichtes, jedoch vollständiges Lehrbuch für den gymnasialen bzw. den elementaren akademischen Unterricht. Für ein frühneuzeitliches Lehrbuch allerdings, das weder dem (spät)scholastischen noch dem ramistischen Darstellungsparadigma - hier Komplexität und Kommentar, da Simplifikation und Visualisierung - folgt, ist Timplers Werk sowohl von seiner klar gegliederten Struktur als auch seinem weitreichenden, beinahe schon ermüdenden Erklärungswillen durchaus stilbildend.
