Der hamburgische Seemann Heinrich Smidt fuhr lange Zeit zur See und schaffte es später bis in die Marinekommission des Berliner Kriegsministeriums. Seine Erfahrungen auf See und seine Kenntnisse von Land und Leuten verwertete er in zahlreichen Erzählungen, Novellen, Romanen, Theaterstücken sowie Jugendbüchern, die ihm den Ruf eines "deutschen Marryat" einbrachten. Der hier vorliegende Band erschien erstmals 1861 und enthält eine Vielzahl maritimer Novellen wie "Die Heimat der Heimatlosen", "Die Surmvögel" und viele andere mehr.
