In der teilweise auf einer historischen Begebenheit beruhenden Erzählung Heinrich von Kleists wird der brandenburgische Roßhändler Michael Kohlhaas das Opfer von Willkür und juristischer Intrige. Zu Unrecht muß er zwei seiner Pferde als Pfand dem Junker Wenzel von Tronka überlassen. Nachdem alle Versuche, sein Eigentum wiederzuerlangen, fehlschlagen, nimmt Kohlhaas das Recht selbst in die Hand und zieht brandschatzend durch das Land. Gerechtigkeit wird ihm zwar zuteil, doch muß er diese teuer bezahlen. Kleist verbindet die Tonart der Chronik mit juristischer Detailbeschreibung und erreicht so eine beeindruckende erzählerische Prägnanz, die den Leser gebannt im Geschehen festhält.
