Karl Müller hält sich für einen Versager. Nach einem Studium ohne Abschluß und diversen Gelegenheitsjobs verdient er seinen Lebensunterhalt schlecht und recht als journalistische Aushilfskraft bei einer Regionalzeitung. Seine Abende verbringt er in einem ausgeleierten Sessel am Fenster seiner Sozialwohnung. Dort fühlt er sich zu Hause, dort taucht er ein in die Welt der deutschen Romantik, führt Zwiegespräche mit dem romantischen Dichter und Philosophen Friedrich Schlegel und treibt seine Phantasiespiele, bei denen er sich fremdes Leben hinter den Fenstern des gegenüberliegenden Wohnblocks ausmalt. Eines Tages aber begegnet er der Realität hinter einem solchen Fenster.
