Every morning at seven, a fluffy ginger cat descends from the chest of a sleeping man. Every morning, the old man is in his chair by the window, tea in hand, radio low, slippered heels worn down at the back.

This is the world. It is small. It is enough.

Then it gets smaller.

Muffy follows a ginger Maine Coon cat from his first home - an elderly man's apartment, its rituals and its dailiness - through a grief that does not perform itself, and into the wards of a hospital where a cat without a place somehow finds he is needed. In a geriatric ward. A pediatric wing. A room in which another cat teaches him what preparation looks like.

In a waiting room, a very large man with a beard and work-worn hands sits carefully on the floor, and asks a question that has never been asked before: "Can he belong to me?"

And on a Friday, a man with ginger hair arrives out of breath, mid-knock, the door already opening.

"I'm here for the cat."

His voice breaks on it. But by then, Muffy is already walking across the wooden floor.



A standalone companion to the Warm Paw series. Readers who know the café will meet Muffy before it existed; readers coming to these pages first will find a complete story of love, loss, and finding home.

This is not the cozy series. It is quieter. More tender. Grief-forward. The same cat, the same restrained voice - but the material is heavier, and the warmth, when it arrives, has been earned through loss. If you are looking for the dry humor of the café and the limes, it is there, eventually. The getting-there takes a different path.
