Less interrogation. More conversation.
"How was school?" "Fine." "Anything happen?" "No." "How was the test?" "Okay." Three questions, almost no conversation, and not because the teenager is difficult. Every question could be answered on autopilot, and every one of them sounded like checking, correcting, investigating, or getting ready to give advice. A teenager hears that coming from across the house. Asked one question deeper, the same evening opens: "What was the best five minutes of your day?" "Probably lunch." "What happened at lunch?" The teenager did not suddenly become talkative. The question changed, and a door opened.
Parents & Teens is not a book for parents to use on teenagers. It is a book two people use together. The teen gets to ask. The parent has to answer. The parent does not automatically get the last word. Inside are 280 questions, each with two follow-ups and a NOTICE line, in eight sections ordered easy to hard:
JUST TALK TO ME. Easy, funny, everyday. No deep dives yet; this section is here to prove that talking can be low-stakes and even fun. "What is something you could talk about for ten straight minutes without stopping?"
YOUR WORLD, MY WORLD. Music, phones, school, slang, and the gap between two generations. The goal is translation, not a verdict on whose youth was better.
FRIENDS & FITTING IN. Friendship, belonging, and the loneliness that hides in plain sight. "Have you ever pretended to be into something just to stay in a group? How long did you keep it up?"
WHO I'M BECOMING. Identity, confidence, independence, values. A person is being built here. Meet who they are becoming, not who they used to be.
HOME & FAMILY. Rules, expectations, chores, and how it actually feels to live here. This one goes both ways hard. The parent is not the villain, and the teen is not on trial.
THE THINGS WE DON'T SAY. Fear, pressure, mistakes, and conflict. The tender country. "When things feel like too much, who do you turn to, and is it ever me? What would make me easier to turn to?"
FREEDOM & TRUST. Privacy, boundaries, driving, decisions, dating, and responsibility, negotiated in the open, in daylight, before the next hard moment. "What do you most want me to trust you to figure out on your own?"
WHAT'S AHEAD. Adulthood, dreams, leaving home, and the relationship as it changes. Not an ending. The start of relating as two adults who happen to love each other. "What do you want to do or see in your life that has nothing to do with a career?"
Every question carries a depth marker, EASY, REAL, or DEEP, and the book asks you to earn your way to the deep end. Three moves are marked on certain questions. SWITCH: the person who just answered turns a related question back on the other, so it is never an interview. SAME AGE: the parent answers twice, once as they are now and once as they were at their teen's age, decades apart. ASK YOUR PARENT: the teen asks, and the parent answers first.
Two rules protect the whole thing. THE PASS: anyone can skip any question, and a pass is protected; no reason owed, and a skipped question is not a failed conversation. THE NO-GOTCHA RULE: nothing answered honestly can be used later as ammunition, in an argument, as a punishment, or as a joke at the person's expense. The one exception is safety; if something involves real danger to someone's health, a caring adult may still need to act.
Use it at home, in the car, over dinner, or anytime you have a few minutes and a willingness to listen. It will not make your teenager talk. No book can promise that. The promise is smaller and truer: it will help you both make better chances to actually hear each other.
