Otto Dorfner war einer der bedeutendsten Buchkünstler des 20. Jahrhunderts und hat bis zu seinem Tod 1955 Hunderte von Buchbindern ausgebildet. 1910 von Henry van de Velde an die Kunstgewerbeschule in Weimar berufen, baut der 25-jährige Buchbindemeister eine wirtschaftlich erfolgreiche Lehr- und Produktivwerkstatt auf. 1919 wird er von Gropius in seiner bisherigen Funktion an das Bauhaus übernommen und arbeitet ab 1922 selbstständig. Dorfners Leidenschaft galt bibliophilen Ausgaben, die von seiner engen Bindung an Van de Velde wie Bauhaus zeugen, sowie Goethes Faust, den er in rund 200 Einbänden immer wieder neu interpretierte. Seine außergewöhnliche Buchkunst wie seine vollständig erhaltene Werkstatt werden reich illustriert vorgestellt.
