The Edge of the Shadow is the final volume of the Parallel Japan trilogy, and it arrives somewhere quieter than the first two-a place where the joke, if there is one, takes longer to land, and where the landing matters more than the laugh.

A stranger appears on a man's balcony one night, sets up a small tent, and explains, with complete serenity, that balconies exist precisely for this purpose. A woman strokes the aerial photograph of an ancient burial mound the way another person might touch a face, and then one day she sends a postcard with no return address. Two regulars at a bar have been conducting, across decades and many rounds of sake, what amounts to one of history's great rivalries-distilled now into the etiquette of who pours for whom. A kettle may or may not be haunted. A dream may or may not be a loop.

Six flash fiction stories, each accompanied by cultural essays that move at the same unhurried pace: the warrior codes of Uesugi Kenshin and Takeda Shingen, two sixteenth-century generals whose legendary rivalry gave Japan one of its most enduring ethical paradoxes; the folklore of Bunbuku Chagama, the tanuki who became a tea kettle and couldn't quite decide which one it preferred to be; and the kofun, Japan's colossal keyhole-shaped burial mounds, silent and vast and still not fully excavated after fifteen hundred years.

The Edge of the Shadow is about what remains when the absurdity has settled-the residue of things that happened quietly, that no one quite named, that left a mark anyway.
