Modern professions can be identified by eight characteristics: (1) highly specialized and advanced education; (2) a special code of personal conduct or "professional ethics"; (3) an ethic of altruism and public service; (4) rigorous tests of competence, such as examinations and licensing; (5) high social prestige and corresponding economic incentives; (6) occupational career patterns or "ladders"; (7) an organized drive to monopolize the market of services; and (8) autonomy. As Queen of the Professions will demonstrate, only in the latter part of the nineteenth century did medicine achieve the full eight characteristics of modern professions. And yet, so quickly, it has seen one-autonomy-erode significantly in the past decade or two and is beginning to experience the crumbling of another, monopoly of the market of services.
