Die Lübecker Niederstadtbücher des Spätmittelalters sind nach Art und Umfang die größte Stadtbuchserie Deutschlands. Im Zweiten Weltkrieg ausgelagert und erst Ende der 1980er-Jahre aus der DDR und der UdSSR zurückgekehrt, stehen sie nach ihrer Restaurierung nun der Forschung wieder zur Verfügung. Als Quelle sind sie der Geschichtswissenschaft zwar seit den 1820/30er-Jahren bekannt, aber man wusste bisher nicht, was genau sie enthalten und zu welchem Zweck sie angelegt wurden. In diesem Buch werden die Niederstadtbücher, die neben Schuldgeschäften vor allem Vorgänge des Lübecker Rechts verzeichnen und dadurch weite Einblicke in die Lebenswelt des Spätmittelalters gewähren, einer gründlichen formalen und inhaltlichen Analyse unterzogen.
