Romance of the Three Kingdoms is one of the four great classical novels of Chinese literature, its full title being Popular Romance of the Records of the Three Kingdoms. Authored by Luo Guanzhong, a novelist of the late Yuan and early Ming dynasties, it holds the distinction of being China's first full-length historical novel written in chapters. Centered on warfare, the narrative chronicles the political and military struggles among the three political powers of Wei, Shu, and Wu. The story unfolds in five major parts: the Yellow Turban Rebellion, Dong Zhuo's tyranny, the contention among warlords, the tripartite standoff, and the eventual unification under Jin. Against an expansive backdrop, it stages wave after wave of surging, majestic battle scenes and successfully brings to life nearly five hundred characters. Among them, figures such as Cao Cao, Liu Bei, Sun Quan, Zhuge Liang, Zhou Yu, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei have become enduringly popular. The work's refusal to frame historical accounts through a simple friend-or-foe lens has exerted a profound and lasting influence on subsequent generations.

In 1953, during the early years of the Writers Publishing House, among its very first publications were these four classical masterpieces: Dream of the Red Chamber, Water Margin, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and Journey to the West. These editions are among the earliest published in New China and remain some of the most influential. For this four-volume series, we have selected the editions that best capture the essence of each work: Dream of the Red Chamber (Cheng Yi Ben), Water Margin (Rong Yu Tang Ben), Romance of the Three Kingdoms (Mao's Commentary Edition), and Journey to the West (Shi De Tang Ben). Experts from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences have been invited to meticulously proofread and annotate the texts, and nearly two hundred finely crafted illustrations have been carefully chosen, striving to provide readers with the definitive editions for their personal libraries.
