In the beginning, the Sawtooth Mountains were distant, forbidding and unexplored, except for the Indians who made summer visits to hunt and fish. Lewis and Clark gave the mysterious peaks a wide berth. Mines flourished, then disappeared. The area remained almost unknown to the outside world until well into the twentieth century. In 1936, W.
