Second Helping of Hope

Mira Johnson likes her life simple. As the head chef at an elite private school, she spends her days feeding picky students, running a spotless kitchen, and perfecting recipes inspired by her mixed cultural roots. Her world runs on structure, routine, and carefully guarded boundaries.

Then there is Theo Markos. The cheerful English teacher with a sweet smile and a terrible collection of dad jokes.

For two years, Theo has shown up at her counter for coffee and conversation, wearing down her defenses one cup at a time. When he finally asks her out, Mira turns him down as gently as she can. She is not ready to risk the life she rebuilt after loss.

But Theo doesn't disappear. He stays patient and respects her boundaries.

And somewhere between shared mornings and quiet laughter, Mira finds herself letting him in.

Just as something real begins to take shape, life shifts in ways neither of them expects. The careful balance Mira depends on starts to slip, and she is left with a choice-to retreat into the safety she knows, or fight for something that finally feels worth the risk.

Because hope, once lost, is not easily trusted. But a second chance doesn't always come at the right time.
