SEI® Technical Manual

The SEI is the world's most widely used measure of emotional intelligence, in continuous use for over two decades across more than 160 countries and 26 languages. This manual documents Version 5.0: a full re-norming and revalidation built on 299,014 assessments.

Five findings shape the release. Global norms had drifted, and V5 rebuilds the reference distribution using square-root-of-N language weighting so the International Norm reflects cross-cultural typicality rather than the response patterns of the largest language group. Total EQ correlates r = .73 with the Overall Outcome composite across 279,069 respondents. A bifactor confirmatory factor analysis supports the Know Yourself / Choose Yourself / Give Yourself structure. Item weights have been rebalanced against empirical item-total correlations rather than expert judgment alone. And a 16-item Short Form now recovers Total EQ at r ≥ .90 in every major language group.
