This third novel in the John Paul Jones Saga picks up in 1768 as the 21 year old First Mate turns away from the African slave trade and from its steady pathway to financial security. As a result of several surprising (but historically certain) twists of fate, Jones climbs to the captaincy of several merchant ships and launches himself toward prominence in British maritime trade. But, these are turbulent times. The American colonies are careening toward independence, reacting to grievances against the British system that favors established wealth and social class. Jones runs straight into this system and is forced to choose between Britain and the unknown. By 1774, the young John Paul has added the "Jones" to his name and is hiding in America seeking a new life.
