Six lives came first. The name came later.

Between April 1971 and September 1972, six Black girls and young women disappeared from ordinary routines in Washington, D.C. Their unresolved homicides became publicly known as the Freeway Phantom murders. Yet the name attached to an unknown offender has often overshadowed the people at the center of the case: Carol Denise Spinks, Darlenia Denise Johnson, Brenda Faye Crockett, Nenomoshia Yates, Brenda Denise Woodard, and Diane Denise Williams.

Six Before the Name is a historical true crime investigation built from official public materials, court opinions, public-record correspondence, contemporary reporting, later investigative reporting, and attributed interviews. It reconstructs the victims' final known routes, the locations where they were found, the pattern that connected the cases, and the fear that spread through Washington as the series became publicly recognized.

The book follows the reported telephone calls connected to Brenda Crockett's disappearance, the handwritten note associated with Brenda Woodard's case, the multi-agency task force, and the jurisdictional division between Washington, D.C., and Prince George's County, Maryland. It examines reported forensic similarities, clothing and trace evidence, biological material, vehicle leads, and publicly discussed suspect theories-without treating an investigative theory as a legal conclusion.

The surviving record is incomplete. Original autopsy reports, laboratory files, evidence inventories, recordings, photographs, and chains of custody are not uniformly available for public review. Rather than converting those gaps into certainty, this account distinguishes confirmed fact from reported information, allegation, interpretation, inference, and speculation. No uncharged person is presented as proven responsible, and no single theory is allowed to substitute for evidence tested in court.

At its center, this is also a book about institutional memory and the human cost of an unresolved case. It explores how divided jurisdictions, missing or inaccessible records, later cold case reviews, public-record requests, renewed reporting, and family remembrance have shaped what can still be known more than half a century later.

Written in a restrained, victim-centered narrative nonfiction style, Six Before the Name is for readers of cold case books, historical true crime, unsolved homicide investigations, Washington, D.C. crime history, forensic evidence, and public-record research. It offers a careful path through the known timeline, the disputed details, the investigative limits, and the questions that remain.

The case has a famous name. This book returns first to the six people whose names should never have been lost behind it.
