Welcome to a practical guide for smartphone gimbal users. This book is designed to take you from picking the right gimbal to unlocking everything your gimbal can do - whether you're shooting TikToks, travel videos, YouTube content, wedding B-roll, or your first short film.

Structured so you can read straight through, or dip into whichever section is most relevant to what you're doing right now. Here's a roadmap of what you can expect:

Buying a Gimbal: This section walks you through the current gimbal landscape - fold-up, full-sized, and hybrid - and the features that actually matter when choosing one. Payload, tracking modules, detachable remotes, gimbal controls, and app support are all covered so you can make an informed decision.

Gimbal Basics: This section lays the groundwork for using any gimbal well. I'll cover the three axes, the four core modes, balancing, follow speed, and the footstep problem - the fundamentals that apply whether you own a DJI, an Insta360, a Hohem, or a Zhiyun.

Camera Apps: This section explores the three-way relationship between your phone's native camera, the app that came with your gimbal, and third-party options like Blackmagic. You'll learn when to reach for which, and why the gimbal's own app is often the wrong first choice. It also covers the shooting modes, gesture control, and manual settings you'll find inside those apps.

AI Tracking: This section covers the biggest single change in smartphone gimbals in the last few years - dedicated tracker modules that let the gimbal follow you around a scene while you use any camera app you want.

Remote Control: This section covers the ways you can operate the gimbal without touching it, from detachable touchscreen remotes to phone-as-remote workflows to Apple Watch integration. Essential material for anyone shooting solo.

Tripods & Extensions: This section covers what happens when you take the gimbal beyond arm's length. Mini tripods, full tripods, built-in extending handles, monopods and extension rods - and the shots each of these unlocks.

Creating Storytelling Sequences: This is the craft chapter. Motivating your camera movement, slowing down, using foreground and light, the reveal shot, focus pulls, and telling a story through the sequence of shots you shoot. The difference between good gimbal footage and great gimbal footage.

The Accessory Challenge: A practical look at where the smartphone rig can start to run away with you - ND filters, cases, variable ND filters, conversion lenses, mist filters and the rest - and how to decide when the kit is serving your creativity and when it's getting in the way.

This final chapter is also where I make the case for keeping things simple, and for why the creative side of filmmaking matters more than the technical side. Practice and a structured approach beat gear, and creative limitations often lead to the most interesting solutions.

Throughout this book, you'll gain a deep understanding of smartphone gimbals through insightful explanations, real-world examples and practical guidance. By engaging with the various sections and applying the knowledge you acquire, you'll have everything you need to get the most out of your gimbal, whatever you're shooting.

One More Thing

If you've read Smartphone Videography: Beginner to Advanced, some of the principles will echo material we've covered before. That's deliberate - this book stands alone, so I've reintroduced what a gimbal reader needs to know without assuming you've read the earlier book. If you have read it, treat those echoes as reinforcement. If you haven't, you're getting the essentials without needing to.
