Im Band wird einleitend der Begriff Standardsprache erläutert und als Gebrauchsstandard konzeptualisiert. Die anschließenden Kapitel stellen die Entwicklung der deutschen Standardsprache dar und behandeln Standardsprachideologien. Danach wird ein Überblick über die Unterschiede zwischen dem geschriebenen und gesprochenen Gebrauchsstandard gegeben und das Verhältnis zwischen Norm und Variation illustriert. Anschließend liegt der Schwerpunkt auf einer Diskussion der Faktoren, die zu sprachlicher Variation führen können. Das Abschlusskapitel widmet sich der diatopischen Variation im Standarddeutschen (z.B. Österreich, Deutschland, Schweiz). Der Band wendet sich an Studierende der germanistischen Sprachwissenschaft und kann auch im gymnasialen Oberstufenunterricht eingesetzt werden.
