Bernadette Lowry has never lived outside of Alpine Ridge except for college. The thought of moving to the mountains of Tennessee hasn't crossed her mind-until now. Being known as 'Birdy' has been her identity since she could remember and now it's almost like a painful contract she's unwillingly signed. What once was a thrill to be the town's most famous brittle and sweets shop owner is now becoming a suffocating inheritance. Steve Robinson has his life figured out. His dream of owning a mechanic shop came true when he was merely twenty-two years old. It's all he's known and he likes it that way-just how he likes his relationship with his best friend, Birdy. It's everflowing and peaceful; it's what grounds him on those hard days when his clothes are smudged with oil and grease. Without Birdy, Steve doesn't feel as complete in Alpine Ridge and he's felt this way since they met in high school. When she tells him about possibly moving out of their hometown, he's unsure how to respond.
