Shawnee war chief Tecumseh tried to forge a confederation of tribes to counter American territorial ambitions. Tecumseh took part in the doomed struggle to preserve the Ohio Valley for aboriginal peoples and was at the Battle of Fallen Timbers in August 1794, which decisively quashed Native aspirations in the region. Tecumseh continued his efforts to rally the tribes against the Americans, visiting the southern nations in 1811 to convince them to join. During the War of 1812, he allied his forces with the British and Canadians, and his active participation was crucial during the early months of the conflict. Tecumseh won a decisive victory against the Americans in the woods at Fort Meigs, Ohio, in May 1813 but was killed at the Battle of Moraviantown in October 1813 in what is now Ontario. Tecumseh's death virtually marked the end of First Nations resistance to U.S. expansion south of the Great Lakes.
