There have been many English translations of The Adventures of Pinocchio. This is not one more of them.
Most English versions of Collodi's book - from the earliest Victorian renditions to the countless editions that followed Disney's 1940 film - share a common impulse: to domesticate. To smooth the edges, soften the darkness, simplify the names. The result, in almost every case, is a book that is easier to read and harder to feel.
This translation makes a different wager.
The Italian names are kept intact. The original darkness is unfiltered. The sharp, dark humour that Disney removed is restored. This edition is accompanied by an original preface by Edoardo Sorrentino - actor, playwright, and theatrical author - that opens the text rather than closes it.
Because this is not the tale of a puppet who lies. It is the odyssey of a soul trapped in matter - drawn to false lights, dragged from crossroads to crossroads, searching for something it cannot yet name.
Pinocchio becomes a real boy. But Lucignolo doesn't. And the reason is not what you think.
A brand new English translation, without losing Tuscany.
The Italian names. The original bite.
No Disneyfication.
