Teferi shows the dynamics of the hydropolitics of the Blue Nile within the broad context of Ethiopian history. He looks at the Blue Nile as a major factor of interaction and interdependence among Ethiopia, the Sudan and Egypt. The river has been the most significant factor in determining the diplomatic posture of the powers in control of the lower basin towards Ethiopia since time immemorial. The issue has been a source of confrontation, mistrust, tension, and fear with a possibility that it might be a cause for direct hostility between the basin countries. The author argues that lack of far-sightedness particularly on the part of the powers in control of the lower basing intensified the Nile issue. The river could not be disconnected from national sentiment and treated as a common and shared natural resource among the riparian states.
