Maya is thirteen, and the game she's loved for two years just ended. The credits roll - hundreds of names, job titles she doesn't understand: designer, programmer, composer, tester. And then, quiet as a tap, the question arrives: how? Could I?
At the library's coding club, her first program prints HELLO and she laughs out loud. Then: nothing works. Her hero falls through the floor. Her dragon spins in useless circles. "Even heroes pause," she mutters - Dad's old line. She breathes. In... out. And with Milo - eight years old, brutally honest, the toughest tester alive - tearing her game apart ("The dragon looks like a potato"), she builds it level by level. Every level is her life: The Shelf. The Basket. Friday Night. A game about bringing the glowy things home.
The finale of The Sunset Basket by Sammie Hale: she used to tap the glow. Then she learned its letters, played its games, learned its rules. Now she makes it. A love letter to every kid who's ever wondered who makes the games.
