Researchers' interest in adolescents living with HIV since birth is a recent phenomenon linked to the availability of antiretroviral treatments, particularly in developing countries. Research on this population is scarce; even scarcer is research on the development of intimacy among these young people. This study aims to explore the development of intimacy in a group of Haitian adolescents living with HIV since birth, in the light of the theoretical models proposed by Furman and Wehner (1997) and Brown (1999). According to these models, intimacy develops through relationships within the family, with peers and with a romantic partner. The study population consists of 29 adolescents of both sexes aged between 15 and 20. These adolescents are being monitored in Port-au-Prince at the adolescent clinic of the GHESKIO centres (Haitian Group for the Study of Kaposi's Sarcoma and Opportunistic Infections). The accounts of these adolescents have enabled the identification of four types of family within which they live: a family of origin, an extended family, a blended family and a new family.
