Some things are lost with everyone's blessing.

In the late autumn of 1977, a letter reaches the small Ohio meditation center Elinor Mersh has kept alone since her husband died. A single red line is drawn across the envelope - the mark of someone who needs to be certain it will be noticed. Inside, an old friend writes from a flourishing community of seekers in Fairfield, Iowa, with a question she cannot ask anyone there: four of the people she loves most are still meditating, still smiling, still saying all the right words - and each of them has somehow gone absent from their own life.
There is no crime to solve. No one has done anything wrong; everyone has acted out of devotion and kindness. But Elinor - a teacher of the same practice, and a stranger to its certainties - knows the harm the moment she sees it: how a person's own deepest experience can be explained to them so well, and so often, that they lose the ability to feel it, or to trust it was ever real.

She cannot undo what the community has built. What she can offer is the one thing it no longer has - someone from outside its frame, willing to look at what a person has touched and tell them, plainly, that it was real, and that the way back is still there, waiting beneath the explanation.
