Five men board a train to Petersburg. By morning, one story will make them question who was ever truly there.

A physician has been warned not to travel. His mind, he is told, requires rest.

As night closes around the carriage, he begins telling his fellow passengers about his life: an orphanage, a boy named Mikhail who became something closer than a brother, and Anna Petrovna, the woman who taught him that love does not always arrive as tenderness.

Then comes Petersburg. A medical practice. A revoked license. And a dying man found in the rain.

What follows is a story of guilt, memory, judgment, and a court determined to separate what can be proven from what can only be remembered. But the physician's account contains one problem that no witness, document, or verdict can resolve:

Mikhail may never have existed at all.

And when the train finally reaches Petersburg, the passengers discover that there is one last question they forgot to ask.
