The year is 1927 and the place Mississippi. Torrential rains have swollen the River to become a lake 60 miles wide. Two teenage boys on the cusp of manhood struggle to fit their musical ambitions into the swirl of the flood and the rock-hard reality of growing up black and poor. After losing family and farm and enduring servitude under the gun, they escape to the Promised Land of Chicago and invent ruckus music, which lies dormant until the folk revival of the 1960s.
