Some records are missing. Others have been made to look the same.

Mara Venn and Elias Rook have returned to Bellweather determined to protect the ordinary married life they fought to choose. When an archivist in Merecross sends them an impossible filing pattern, they agree to answer one bounded question from home-without travel, without silver contact and without taking ownership of another institution's failures.

But the North Reach papers hide more than a clerical mistake. Notices called duplicates bear different custody histories. A gap marks something absent without proving what it was. Local acknowledgements preserve endings the official index never learned to name.

As binder Rhea Sol tests the damaged papers and preservation worker Dessa Vale challenges an archive built on invisible labour, Elias must correct the certainty he once taught others. Mara must decide how much of her craft-and how much of her hard-won peace-she is willing to offer.

The truth will not arrive as one perfect answer. It will have to be built from limits, paid work and the courage to leave uncertainty visible.
