Over many years of studying neurobiology, cognitive science, psychology, healthspan, and human behavior, one observation became impossible for me to ignore. Human beings do not experience life in separate compartments.
Stress does not simply affect thoughts and feelings. It can influence sleep, energy, digestion, focus, motivation, emotions, and relationships. Joy can create warmth throughout the body before we consciously explain it. Fear can change breathing and heart rhythms within seconds. A familiar smell can suddenly bring back memories that seemed forgotten decades ago.
I found myself asking a compelling and intriguing question: Who keeps the score? Like everyone else, I didn't know the answer, but I got curious and wanted to explore.
Some researchers and clinicians suggest that the body keeps the score. Others argue that the body does not literally keep the score and propose that trauma and emotional experiences may emerge through prediction, adaptive processing, and changing neural states.
As I reflected on these useful perspectives, I felt that the discussion might be larger than either side alone. Perhaps neither the body nor the mind solely keeps the score; there is more to human experience. Human experience through evolution appears richer and more interconnected than explanations centered on any single system.
For example, cells continuously communicate. Hormones carry signals throughout the body. Neural circuits reorganize through experience. Hidden processes beneath conscious awareness influence attention and perception. Relationships influence biology. Environments change behavior, and experiences alter future experiences.
Life itself seems to operate as a continuous conversation among many interacting systems. This realization led me toward a new question. What if the body alone never kept the score? What if the score has always been updated by a living matrix that continuously interacts across time among the body, mind, cells, behavior, relationships, and environment?
In this book, I introduce my Embodied Cognition LIFE Matrix™ (Layered Integrative Framework of Experience). I do not present it as a final theory or claim to possess all the answers. Scientific understanding grows through observation, discussion, disagreement, evidence, and refinement over time.
My goal is more modest and perhaps more ambitious at the same time. With scientific curiosity, I want to explore whether many things we study separately may actually represent different expressions of the same adaptive architecture. Together, we will examine fascinating questions.
How do emotional experiences become represented within the body and nervous system? Why do subconscious processes appear to influence daily life more than many people realize? How do cells communicate through signaling systems, metabolism, hormones, and adaptation? Why might mitochondria influence much more than energy production? How do repeated experiences and attention impact neural pathways? Why do stress, learning, resilience, relationships, movement, sleep, and graceful aging seem more interconnected than we once imagined? And, most importantly, how do these systems continuously update the experience we call being human?
Drawing from neuroscience, psychology, trauma research, embodied cognition, learning science, systems biology, healthspan research, and decades of professional observations in ethnographic settings, I invite you to explore a broader perspective with me.
I believe some of the most interesting discoveries emerge when we stop asking which explanation is correct and begin asking how seemingly separate explanations may fit together.
Perhaps the body never kept the score alone. Perhaps cellular signaling, physiological regulation, neural circuits, subconscious and conscious processes, behavior, and environmental influences have been updating the experience we call life together all along.
