A shepherd has one hundred sheep. One goes missing. He leaves the ninety-nine and goes after the one. For two thousand years this story has been admired as a picture of love that overrides good sense. It has almost never been read as what it also is: a claim about arithmetic, and a correct one.
Anna Kriger takes the most familiar parable in the Gospels and asks a question that neither pulpits nor boardrooms have thought to ask. Is the shepherd being generous, or is the accountant being wrong? The answer, worked out through ergodic theory, viability analysis, network structure, evolutionary genetics, and nine years of running a shelter where no one was ever permanently expelled, is that the accountant is wrong, and wrong in five identifiable ways. A loss rate of one percent is not a small loss. It is a certainty, reported in units that hide it. A flock is not a hundred interchangeable animals. The number below which a person is written off is a number nobody can measure. And the ninety-nine are not endangered by the search at all. They are its main beneficiaries, because the promise that generates it is what lets each of them wander further than a member of a flock that abandons strays would ever dare.
What emerges is a book that does something unusual. It shows that on this one question the believer and the unbeliever arrive at the same place by different roads, and that neither has to give anything up on the way. The reader who holds that every person is of infinite worth will find the conclusion confirmed. The reader who holds no such thing will find it entailed anyway. Along the way the book visits the church fathers who read the parable as being about the whole human race rather than about individuals, a sled dog twice given away as useless who saved a town, a hormone that makes us kind to our own and hostile to strangers, and a houseplant that halved the death rate in a nursing home.
Written with wit, candor, and a refusal to sentimentalize, The Lost Sheep is for anyone who has ever been the one who wandered off, anyone who has ever been asked to justify going after them, and anyone who suspects that the hard-headed case for cutting losses has never actually been checked.
The book is based on academic paper: Kriger, A. (2026). Retrieval or Attrition: Why Discarding Policies Are Self-Defeating in Non-Ergodic Populations. IIIR Computational Humanities and Cultural Systems. https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.21515173
