A minister arrives. A minister dies. A very large brass plaque has some explaining to do.
Six weeks into her new life on San Andrés, Eleanor Hartley has learned to cope with the heat, the chickens, and an island that answers every question about tea with something else. Then a government minister lands on the island to talk about coastal protection. By morning he is dead on the old harbour, with the plaque he was given the night before beside him.
The suspects are plentiful: an angry activist, a smooth company man, a chief of staff who knows too much. The police are outranked. The mainland is sending someone who finds the local press "very brave." And Eleanor, asking the questions nobody wants asked, is about to find that the truth on San Andrés rarely arrives without cost.
