The Work Beneath the Work: For People Who Built Their Strength from Struggle - and Haven't Named It Yet
Some leaders walk into a room and instantly know what's happening beneath the surface. They sense the fear, read the unspoken dynamics, and hold the group together without anyone quite knowing how. This capacity isn't taught in business school. It develops earlier - in households where reading the room wasn't a professional skill but a survival strategy.
The Work Beneath the Work is the story of how that intelligence is formed, and what happens when it finally gets named.
Ted Leonhardt was adopted at five months, fostered before that, and grew up in poverty in Seattle. He built a branding firm to ten million dollars in fees, sold it, and went on to lead five hundred creatives across twenty-seven offices worldwide as Chief Creative Officer. For twenty years he advised creative firms and their leaders. And for most of those years, he didn't understand where his most important professional capacity came from.
This book is the account of finally understanding.
Part memoir, part field guide, The Work Beneath the Work moves between the childhood that built Leonhardt's attunement - his ability to read rooms, sense fear, and hold groups together under pressure - and the professional practice that put it to use. The book argues that these two things are not separate. The intelligence that develops in a difficult childhood becomes, without the person knowing it, a methodology. And when that methodology finally gets recognized and named, everything changes.
Illustrated throughout with sixty-two original pen-and-ink drawings - one per chapter - this is a book for founders and leaders of creative firms, for adoptees and foster-care survivors, and for anyone who built something real out of a hard beginning and hasn't yet understood what they actually built it on.
The Work Beneath the Work is Ted Leonhardt's second book.
