Thread Management offers a practical framework for organizations that must stay true to their core purpose while adapting continuously to change.
Drawing on my intuition and personal experience, coupled with living-systems theory (Fritjof Capra), the Systems Engineering Body of Knowledge (SEBoK), and the biological precedent of symbiogenesis (Lynn Margulis), the book rejects the false choice between rigid command-and-control and unstructured self-management. Instead, it shows how invariant purpose, identity, and values can serve as the stable "thread" that enables distributed and aggregate decision-making, rapid reorganization, and genuine innovation.
Seven measurable operational dimensions, leadership boundary-setting, decision authority, change mechanisms, role definition, learning pathways, organizational form, and novelty generation, are suggested to give practitioners concrete direction on how to design their own parameters. Four random public case studies illustrate some of the patterns in action across different industries. Gaps in applying the principles presented do exist, and are openly acknowledged.
Written for thinkers, leaders, organizational designers, and systems practitioners, Thread Management attempts to translates life into actionable methodology without sacrificing intellectual honesty. It is the author's views on life applied to organizational design: deliberate maintenance of what must remain constant so that everything else can adapt.
