Zwar ist die Rede vom 'Nullpunkt der Literatur' nach 1945 mittlerweile als Mythos erkannt, der aus dem Bedürfnis nach einem moralischen Neuanfang und damit verbunden einer 'Neuen Literatur' resultierte, aber die Forschung scheint implizit an diesem Mythos festzuhalten: Die Texte z.B. von Heinrich Böll, Arno Schmidt oder Wolfgang Koeppen werden dem Selbstverständnis ihrer Autoren entsprechend als ebenso gesellschaftskritische wie ästhetisch avancierte Auseinandersetzungen mit der jüngsten deutschen Geschichte gelesen, die eine moralisch integre Aufarbeitung im Modus der Fiktion boten und den verlorenen Anschluss an die literarische Moderne wieder herstellten. Diese Übereinstimmung zwischen dem Selbstbild der Autoren und ihren Interpreten nimmt die vorliegende Studie zum Ausgangspunkt. Zum einen werden bislang nicht beachtete Differenzen zwischen den Textstrukturen und den Strukturen der literarischen Öffentlichkeit erläutert; und zum anderen erweist sich, dass die bisherigen Interpretationen teilweise revidiert werden müssen: Denn die Romane präsentieren zwar tatsächlich vielfach eine ästhetisch moderne 'Oberfläche', wie immer wieder festgestellt wurde - entwerfen dabei allerdings, gleichsam unter dieser Oberfläche verborgen, vormoderne Geschichts-, Gesellschafts- und Personenkonzepte und wirken so letztlich nicht zeitkritisch, sondern vielmehr schuldentlastend.
