Eine neuere Einführung in das Urnordische, die Sprache der älteren Runeninschriften und der Vorläufer aller nordgermanischen Sprachen, ist ein Desiderat. Der vorliegende Band legt neben der synchronen Beschreibung von Phonologie, Morphologie und Syntax besonderes Gewicht auf die Überlieferung der älteren Runeninschriften und die sprachgeschichtlichen Fakten. Die einzelnen Lautwandelprozesse und die Stellung des Urnordischen innerhalb des Germanischen und Nordwestgermanischen werden ausführlich behandelt. Besonderer Wert wird darauf gelegt, Erkenntnisse der Nachbardisziplinen wie Schriftlinguistik und Indogermanistik zu berücksichtigen und die neuere wissenschaftliche Literatur einzubeziehen. Ein Anhang mit linguistischem Glossar und den wichtigsten urnordischen Runeninschriften, besonders neueren Funden der letzten Jahre und Jahrzehnte, runden den Band ab.
