Whistlings in the Dark is the fifth collection of short stories by local writer Noel Spence. As in the previous books, the stories cover a wide range of settings and storylines, but are unified through the thread of psychological or emotional disturbance in the lives of the central characters. All of them are subject to an underlying fear, uncertainty or sense of inadequacy, born of feelings of envy, dissatisfaction, persecution, delusion, alienation and the like. It is how they cope with this paranoiac strand of their identity that gives the collection its title, and lends the note of imbalance and disorder that characterises the narratives. Readers familiar with Secrets, Lies and Luck, On the Edge, and Uncaged, the earlier collections, will find the same pace, dark humour, and narrative accessibility in these fifteen marginally longer and more fully developed stories.
