Why do people repeat the same reaction, mistake, defense, silence, refusal, or old route even after they understand what it costs?
The usual answers arrive too quickly: weakness, resistance, bad habits, low motivation, or bad character. Those labels may describe the surface. They do not show where the adaptation loop actually diverges.
Why Do I Keep Acting This Way? introduces four questions:
Map - What has the person decided is happening?
Self - Who does the person become inside the scene?
Tool - What action is actually available under load?
Environment - What does the outside world return to the attempt, error, refusal, or change?
The same visible behavior can come from different addresses. A person may understand the situation but lose their position under shame. They may remain steady but lack a usable move. They may have the move in one setting and lose it when the environment makes error too expensive. Or they may keep changing the environment while the missing tool remains unbuilt.
This is why repeated patterns often survive insight and good intentions: the correction is aimed at the visible symptom rather than the address that failed.
This book is not therapy, a diagnosis, a personality test, or a habit-building system. Its task is narrower and more foundational: to provide a clear architecture for reading behavior before applying pressure, support, explanation, practice, or environmental change to the wrong place.
The goal is not a new label. The goal is a better address.
